Post Op Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns Post-Op Instructions
Congratulations on completing your dental crown procedure! To ensure your crown settles properly and to maintain your comfort during the healing process, please follow these post-operative care instructions carefully.

1. Managing Numbness
The anesthesia used during your procedure may cause numbness in your lips, cheeks or tongue for a few hours. Avoid chewing until the numbness wears off to prevent accidental biting or injury.

2. Adjusting to Your Temporary Crown (if applicable)
If you have a temporary crown, avoid sticky or hard foods, as they can dislodge or damage it. Chew on the opposite side of your mouth when possible and practice good oral hygiene by brushing gently around the temporary crown.

3. Sensitivity and Discomfort
It is normal to experience mild sensitivity to hot, cold or pressure after the procedure. This sensitivity should subside within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage any discomfort.

4. Avoiding Certain Foods
After the placement of a permanent crown, avoid hard, sticky or crunchy foods for the first 24 hours. This allows the cement to set completely and ensures a secure fit.

5. Caring for Your Crown
Maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine, including brushing twice a day, flossing daily and rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash. When flossing, slide the floss out gently instead of pulling upward to avoid loosening the crown.

6. Monitoring Fit and Comfort
Your crown should feel comfortable and blend naturally with your bite. If you experience any pain, unevenness or discomfort when chewing, contact our office for an adjustment.

7. Long-Term Maintenance
Routine dental visits are essential to monitor the health of your crown and surrounding teeth. Be sure to schedule regular checkups and cleanings to keep your smile in top shape.

If you have any questions or concerns about your crown, or if you notice persistent discomfort, sensitivity or swelling, please call our office. We are here to ensure your recovery is smooth and that your dental health remains optimal!
