Post Op Dental Fillings

Dental Fillings Post-Op Instructions
Thank you for trusting us with your dental care. Following these instructions will help ensure a smooth recovery and long-lasting results from your dental filling procedure.

Immediate Aftercare

  • Avoid eating or drinking until the numbness from the anesthesia completely wears off. This will prevent accidental biting of your cheek, lips or tongue.
  • If you received a composite (tooth-colored) filling, it is hardened immediately, and you may resume eating as soon as the numbness is gone. If you received an amalgam (metal) filling, avoid chewing on that side for at least 24 hours.

Sensitivity and Discomfort

  • It is normal to experience some sensitivity to hot, cold or pressure following a filling. This sensitivity should subside within a few days to a couple of weeks.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be taken if you feel any discomfort. Follow the dosage instructions on the packaging.

Bite Adjustment

  • If your bite feels uneven or high once the anesthesia wears off, please contact our office. A quick adjustment may be needed to prevent long-term discomfort or damage.

Oral Hygiene

  • Resume brushing and flossing as normal, but be gentle around the treated tooth, especially for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid sticky or hard foods that could dislodge the filling, particularly if it is an amalgam filling.

When to Call Us

  • Persistent sensitivity or pain beyond two weeks.
  • A sharp edge or rough surface on the filling.
  • Any visible cracks, chips or signs the filling has come loose.

We are here to ensure your treatment is successful and your recovery is comfortable. If you have any concerns, do not hesitate to call us.
