Post Op Dental Implants

Dental Implants Post-Op Instructions
Following your dental implant procedure, proper care and attention are essential for a smooth recovery and the success of your implant. Please review and follow these instructions carefully. If you experience any unusual symptoms or have concerns, contact our office promptly.

Day of Surgery

  • Bleeding: Minor bleeding is normal. Bite gently on gauze placed over the surgical site, replacing it every 30–45 minutes as needed. Avoid spitting or using straws to prevent dislodging the clot.
  • Pain Management: Take prescribed pain medication or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed. Begin before the numbness wears off for better pain control.
  • Swelling: Apply an ice pack to the cheek in 15-minute intervals for the first 24 hours to minimize swelling.
  • Diet: Stick to soft, cool foods and avoid chewing on the surgical side. Stay hydrated but avoid hot beverages for the first day.

Oral Hygiene

  • Avoid brushing the surgical site for the first 24 hours. Afterward, gently rinse with a warm saltwater solution (½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) after meals. Continue regular brushing and flossing for the rest of your mouth, taking care not to disturb the implant site.

Activity Restrictions

  • Rest is essential. Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for the first few days to prevent increased bleeding or swelling.

Smoking and Alcohol

  • Refrain from smoking or using tobacco products, as they can impair healing. Avoid alcohol for at least 72 hours or as directed by your dentist.

What to Expect

  • Swelling and discomfort should gradually subside within 3–5 days. Bruising around the cheeks or jaw is normal and should fade in a week or two.
  • If sutures were placed, they may dissolve on their own or need removal, depending on your dentist’s instructions.

Follow-Up Appointments

  • Attend all scheduled follow-ups to ensure proper healing and integration of your implant.
