Dentures Post-Op Instructions
Thank you for trusting us with your denture treatment. Proper care and adjustment are essential to ensure your comfort and the longevity of your dentures. Please follow these post-operative instructions carefully.
Adjusting to Your New Dentures
- Initial discomfort: It is normal to experience some soreness, irritation or excessive saliva as your mouth adjusts to the dentures. These symptoms should improve over time.
- Practice speaking: It may take time to speak clearly. Practice reading aloud to help your tongue and lips adjust to the new appliance.
- Start with soft foods: Stick to soft foods and small bites as you learn to chew with your dentures. Gradually reintroduce harder foods.
Cleaning and Maintenance
- Daily cleaning: Remove your dentures and clean them daily using a soft denture brush and non-abrasive denture cleaner. Avoid using regular toothpaste, as it can scratch the surface.
- Mouth care: Gently brush your gums, tongue and the roof of your mouth with a soft toothbrush to maintain oral health.
- Overnight care: Soak your dentures in a denture-cleaning solution or plain water when not in use. Do not let them dry out.
Managing Discomfort
- Follow-up adjustments: If your dentures feel loose, cause significant discomfort or create sore spots, schedule a follow-up visit. Adjustments are common and necessary for the best fit.
- Use adhesive sparingly: If needed, use a denture adhesive as directed, but inform your dentist if you require frequent adhesive use.
