Post Op Oral Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer Screening Post-Op Instructions

Thank you for visiting us for your oral cancer screening. While this procedure is generally noninvasive and painless, some screenings may involve a biopsy, staining or other minor interventions. Please follow these instructions to ensure proper healing and maintain your oral health:

1. Monitor Your Symptoms

  • After a visual screening, no special aftercare is typically required. However, if you experience unusual symptoms, such as persistent discomfort or swelling, notify our office.
  • If a biopsy was performed, mild soreness or tenderness at the biopsy site is normal for a day or two.

2. Care for the Biopsy Site (if applicable)

  • Avoid hot, spicy or acidic foods for the first 24-48 hours to prevent irritation.
  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) two to three times daily to keep the area clean.
  • Avoid touching or disturbing the area with your tongue or fingers.

3. Pain Management

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help reduce discomfort. Follow the dosage instructions on the label.
  • Avoid aspirin as it may increase bleeding.

4. Prevent Bleeding

  • If you notice minor bleeding, apply gentle pressure to the area with a clean, damp gauze or cloth for 10-15 minutes.
  • Avoid smoking, as it can delay healing and increase the risk of complications.

5. Stay Hydrated and Eat Soft Foods

  • Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day.
  • Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes or soup until any tenderness subsides.

6. Follow-Up Appointment

  • If a biopsy was performed, we will contact you with the results as soon as they are available.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments to discuss your results and any necessary next steps.

7. Contact Us for Concerns

  • If you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, signs of infection (swelling, redness or fever) or any other concerning symptoms, contact our office immediately.

Your health and comfort are our top priorities. If you have questions or need assistance, please call us. We are here to support you every step of the way.
