Oral Surgery Post-Op Instructions
To ensure proper healing and minimize discomfort following your oral surgery, please follow the instructions provided by our dentists and team. Below are some general post-op instructions, and we may provide additional instructions specific to the procedure your receive at the time of your treatment. If you experience any complications or have questions, contact our office promptly.
1. Manage Bleeding:
- Minor bleeding or oozing is normal. Bite down on the provided gauze for 30–45 minutes after the procedure. Replace it as needed.
- If bleeding persists, use a damp tea bag in place of gauze for 20–30 minutes; the tannins can help reduce bleeding.
2. Control Swelling:
- Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face near the surgical site in 20-minute intervals for the first 24–48 hours.
- Swelling may peak within the first two days but should gradually decrease.
3. Pain Management:
- Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed.
- Avoid taking medication on an empty stomach to prevent nausea.
4. Eating and Drinking:
- Stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days, such as yogurt, applesauce or mashed potatoes.
- Avoid hot, spicy or crunchy foods, as well as straws, which can dislodge the blood clot and lead to dry socket.
5. Oral Hygiene:
- Avoid rinsing, spitting or brushing near the surgical site for the first 24 hours.
- After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in 8 ounces of water) three times daily and after meals.
6. Activity Level:
- Rest for the first 24–48 hours. Avoid strenuous activity or exercise for at least one week to reduce the risk of bleeding or swelling.
7. Follow-Up Care:
- Attend your scheduled post-operative appointment so we can monitor your healing.
- If you had sutures placed, we will advise if and when they need to be removed.
