Pediatric Dentistry Post-Op Instructions

Thank you for trusting us with your child’s dental care. To ensure a smooth recovery, please follow these post-operative instructions carefully. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact our office.

1. Bleeding Control

Mild bleeding or pink saliva is normal after dental procedures. Have your child bite gently on the gauze provided for 20–30 minutes to control bleeding. Replace the gauze as needed until it stops. Avoid letting your child chew on the gauze or any foreign objects.

2. Pain Management

Discomfort is common after dental treatments. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help manage pain. Follow dosage instructions based on your child’s age and weight. Avoid aspirin, as it can increase the risk of bleeding.

3. Swelling and Bruising

Swelling can occur, especially after extractions or surgical procedures. Apply an ice pack to the affected area for 15 minutes at a time, with a 15-minute break in between, during the first 24 hours. Swelling should decrease within a few days.

4. Diet and Hydration

Stick to soft foods for the first 24–48 hours. Great options include yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes and smoothies (avoid straws to prevent dislodging clots). Ensure your child stays hydrated with water or clear liquids but avoid hot, spicy or crunchy foods.

5. Oral Hygiene

Resume gentle brushing the day after the procedure, avoiding the treated area. Rinsing with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) can help keep the area clean. Do not allow your child to rinse vigorously, spit forcefully or use mouthwash for the first 24 hours.

6. Activity Level

Encourage rest and calm activities for the first 24 hours. Avoid strenuous physical activities that might increase bleeding or discomfort.

7. Numbness Awareness

If your child received local anesthesia, remind them not to chew, bite or scratch their lips, cheeks or tongue while numb. Monitor them closely until sensation returns to prevent accidental injury.

8. Follow-Up Care

Attend all recommended follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing. If your child has a dental appliance, we will check its fit and functionality during these visits.
