Same-Day Implants Post-Op Instructions
Thank you for trusting us with your same-day dental implant procedure. To ensure proper healing and the success of your implant, please follow these post-operative instructions carefully:
1. Manage Bleeding
It is normal to experience light bleeding or pink saliva for 24–48 hours. Bite down gently on the gauze provided to control bleeding, changing it every 30–45 minutes as needed. If bleeding persists, bite down on a damp tea bag for 20 minutes. Contact our office if bleeding does not subside.
2. Control Swelling
Swelling is common and may peak 48 hours after surgery. To minimize swelling, apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek in 15-minute intervals during the first 24 hours. Avoid applying heat to the area.
3. Pain Management
You may experience some discomfort once the local anesthetic wears off. Take the prescribed pain medication or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed. Avoid aspirin, as it may increase bleeding.
4. Maintain a Soft Diet
Stick to soft foods such as yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes and smoothies for the first 7–10 days. Avoid chewing on the implant site and stay away from hard, crunchy or sticky foods. Avoid hot beverages and alcohol for 24 hours.
5. Oral Hygiene
Maintain oral hygiene with care. Gently rinse with a warm saltwater solution (1 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) 2–3 times daily starting the day after surgery. Avoid brushing near the surgical site for the first few days. Resume brushing and flossing other areas of your mouth as usual.
6. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol
Smoking and alcohol consumption can interfere with healing and increase the risk of implant failure. Refrain from smoking for at least two weeks and avoid alcohol for 48 hours.
7. Physical Activity
Limit physical activity for the first 48–72 hours to prevent increased bleeding or swelling. Rest and avoid strenuous exercise during this time.
8. Follow-Up Care
Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress. If temporary teeth were placed, follow the specific care instructions provided for them.
