Sleep Apnea Treatment Post-Op Instructions
Thank you for beginning your sleep apnea treatment with an oral appliance. To ensure a smooth adjustment and successful outcome, please follow these instructions:
General Care
- Initial Adjustment: It is normal to feel slight discomfort or pressure when you first begin using your oral appliance. Wear it as directed to allow your mouth to adjust gradually.
- Use Schedule: Start wearing the appliance as instructed, typically during sleep. If discomfort persists, wear it for short periods during the day to help your mouth adapt.
- Hydration: Stay hydrated, as wearing an oral appliance may cause mild dry mouth. Keep water nearby, especially at night.
Oral Hygiene
- Cleaning the Appliance: Clean your oral appliance daily using a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste or mild soap. Avoid using hot water, as it may warp the material.
- Mouth Care: Maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly. Consider rinsing with a non-alcoholic mouthwash to keep your mouth fresh and free of bacteria.
Follow-Up Adjustments
- Monitoring Fit: Over time, adjustments may be necessary to ensure optimal effectiveness. Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to allow us to check and fine-tune the appliance.
- Tracking Progress: Inform us of any ongoing symptoms, such as snoring or daytime fatigue, as these may indicate the need for further adjustments.
