TMJ Treatment Post-Op Instructions
Thank you for trusting us with your TMJ treatment. To ensure optimal healing and comfort after your procedure, please follow these post-operative instructions carefully. If you have any concerns, contact our office promptly.
1. Manage Discomfort:
- You may experience some soreness or discomfort in the jaw area. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help alleviate this.
- Apply a cold compress to the affected area for 10–15 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours to reduce swelling and discomfort.
2. Diet:
- Stick to a soft diet for the first few days to minimize strain on your jaw. Examples include soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes and smoothies. Avoid chewing gum, hard foods or anything that requires extensive jaw movement.
3. Jaw Movement:
- Avoid excessive jaw movements, such as wide yawning, singing or clenching your teeth.
- If you were prescribed jaw exercises, perform them gently as directed.
4. Oral Hygiene:
- Maintain good oral hygiene, but be cautious around the treated area. Avoid aggressive brushing or flossing near the jaw joints.
5. Medications:
- Take any prescribed medications as directed, including muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatory drugs.
- If antibiotics were prescribed, complete the entire course, even if you start feeling better.
6. Physical Therapy or Splints:
- If you have been given a night guard or splint, wear it as instructed.
- Attend any recommended physical therapy sessions to aid in your recovery.
7. Follow-Up Appointments:
- Schedule and attend all follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan if needed.
8. Lifestyle Modifications:
- Avoid stress or activities that may increase clenching or grinding. Consider stress-relief techniques such as deep breathing or meditation.
- Practice good posture, especially when sitting at a desk or using a phone, to reduce strain on the jaw.
