Post Op Tooth Extractions

Tooth Extractions Post-Op Instructions
Caring for your mouth properly after a tooth extraction is essential for promoting healing and preventing complications. Please follow these instructions carefully:

1. Manage Bleeding
Keep the gauze pad placed over the extraction site for 30-45 minutes after leaving the office. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze with a clean one and bite down gently for an additional 30 minutes. Slight oozing is normal for up to 24 hours, but heavy bleeding should be reported immediately.

2. Control Swelling
Swelling is common after an extraction. To reduce it, apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek near the extraction site for 15-20 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours.

3. Alleviate Pain
Take any prescribed pain medications as directed or use over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen to manage discomfort. Avoid aspirin as it can increase bleeding.

4. Maintain Oral Hygiene
Take any prescribed pain medications as directed or use over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen to manage discomfort. Avoid aspirin as it can increase bleeding.

5. Dietary Guidelines
Stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, applesauce or mashed potatoes for the first day. Avoid hot, spicy or hard foods, and refrain from chewing near the extraction site.

6. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol
Do not smoke or drink alcohol for at least 48 hours as these can interfere with healing and increase the risk of dry socket.

7. Physical Activity
Rest and limit physical activity for 24-48 hours. Overexertion can lead to increased bleeding and delayed healing.

8. Monitor for Signs of Complications
Contact our office immediately if you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, fever or swelling that worsens after the initial 48 hours.

By following these instructions, you can ensure a smooth recovery. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our office. We are here to support you.
