Root Canal Therapy Post-Op Instructions
Thank you for trusting us with your root canal treatment. Following these post-operative instructions will help ensure a smooth recovery and protect your tooth as it heals.
1. Pain Management
It is normal to experience mild discomfort or sensitivity for a few days after your root canal. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage this. Take them as directed on the packaging or according to your dentist’s instructions. If you have been prescribed medication, follow the dosage instructions carefully.
2. Eating and Drinking
Avoid eating until the numbness from the procedure completely wears off to prevent accidental biting of your tongue or cheek. Stick to soft foods for the first 24 hours and avoid chewing on the treated side of your mouth until your tooth has been permanently restored with a crown or filling.
3. Oral Hygiene
Keep your mouth clean to promote healing. Brush and floss gently around the treated tooth, taking care not to irritate the area. Maintaining good oral hygiene will help prevent infection.
4. Temporary Filling or Crown
If your root canal includes a temporary filling or crown, avoid chewing sticky or hard foods on that side of your mouth. These can dislodge the temporary material. A permanent restoration will be placed during your follow-up visit.
5. Swelling and Discomfort
Slight swelling or tenderness around the treated tooth is normal. Applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 10-minute intervals can reduce swelling and discomfort.
